How I changed my life in 6 months
6 months ago I was living in London. Travelling, drinking, meeting new people and making new memories. This was, of course, fueled by alcohol. Then I moved home to Australia and I had to completely start from scratch….
Moving back to the city I grew up in was strange because everyone had continued on with their life, in their own way (just as I had abroad). Yet, it still felt like nothing had actually changed. The only difference now was, I had.
There are 3 things that are ultimately holding you back from the life you desire. A bad habit, your friendship circle and your ability for delayed gratification.
A month into being home I got my first job with my degree (Bachelor of Architectural Design) and I VERY quickly noticed some of my old habits and routines from my London life just didn't fit who I was anymore. It was time for an overhaul.
1. A Bad Habit
My goals and priorities shifted from travelling, new experiences, testing myself in new environments and making memories to heavily focussing on my career and setting myself up financially again (I almost forgot to mention, I moved home dead broke). The first habit I knew that didn't suit my new lifestyle was alcohol, so after 2 months of drinking while trying to balance this new role and lifestyle, I decided it wasn't working and quit.
You see, alcohol can be a great thing depending on what stage of life you're in. It helped me so much as a solo traveller and getting me out of my shell to meet new people. But now, in this new life I had thrown myself into, feeling bang average and slow from a hangover and bad sleep was detrimental to my progress within my new career which I genuinely enjoy and am learning lots from. I am currently 3.5 months sober as of writing this and I haven't looked back.
Your task: Identify a habit that isn't working for your new lifestyle and get rid of it.
2. Your Friendship Circle
Before I moved abroad I took the time to identify a small group of people that I wanted to remain close to no matter what happened while I was away. Of those 5 people, I am still in touch and good friends with all of them. They were all chosen for different qualities they have and I believe that spending time with them (whether altogether or individually) makes me a better version of myself. Obviously you meet new people while you're away which become your 'core' group, but I knew that I had a core group back home that I had to still keep in touch with because they were important to me. It is clear to me that I chose this group well and looking back at that decision I made, it may just be one of the best (but toughest) I have ever made. This cut people who didn't quite align with me out of my life, it pushed people who didn't understand where I wanted to go in life and therefore judged me away, and it has simplified my lifestyle to the point that I do what I want to do and am still able to facilitate catching up with these 5 people on a regular basis.
Your task: Identify a core group of friends who you believe will get you to the next stage in your life and make them a priority over anyone else (except family, of course).
3. Your Ability for Delayed Gratification
This is an ability that I believe most humans these days lack severely. We go to the gym and expect to have a 6 pack tomorrow, we eat healthy and expect to drop 10kg tomorrow, we pick up an instrument that we've never played and expect to be able to play it tomorrow. This just isn't how it works. You need to put effort into something for an extended period of time before you see any sort of result from it.
Your task: Identify a goal you want to achieve and every day for at least 6 months do something that will move you in the direction of that goal.
What you'll notice if you do these steps correctly is, your core group of friends will encourage and push you towards your goal and the bad habit you removed from your life will enable you to do the daily task more consistently. Over the course of 6 months you will be so far from where you were that you'll never want to turn back, that's the delayed gratification kicking in. The best part? This is the exact model that is built into the 'Habiter.' app which you can download for free.
Are you ready for the best 6 months of your life?
