How consistency can rewire your brain
You can completely rewire your brain purely through being consistent. Let me explain.
If you're reading this you've probably tried, at one point or another, to build a better life through better habits. You're also probably here because they haven't always worked out. Some you built, others slipped away and others just weren't for you. But what if I told you that they could all work? And they could all be for you.
First, a word: neuroplasticity
It looks big and scary, but simply put it's 'your brain's ability to reorganise, adapt, and rewire its physical structure and neural connections in response to learning, experience, or injury' (Tworek, 2023). And it works best when you're consistently doing something.
You know that feeling when you start something new and you find it hard? But the more you do it, the more it turns into just muscle memory and second nature? That is you literally rewiring your brain to be able to do the new thing. This takes time and it also takes work. But if you can be consistent, you are actively giving your brain the best chance at rewiring itself.
What it looks like in real life
Take the gym for example, let's say you haven't been for a couple months and you want to get back into it. There's a reason they say 'keep it small' when referring to goals. Just getting yourself to the gym consistently will rewire your brain into thinking that you go to the gym regularly. Before you know it, it won't feel like a chore to go.
Or learning a new skill, we'll use the guitar as an example because I recently taught myself how to play. Just by simply picking up the guitar and playing around for 15 minutes everyday meant I was actively rewiring my brain. Now, I can play a bunch of songs. All because I was willing to be consistent with it for an extended period of time.
The takeaway
So, the next time you want to start something new or build a better habit, just remember: Your brain needs consistency for it to rewire. You can quite literally become anyone or anything you want through this method, it just depends how badly you want it.
