Some of your habits may be causing dementia
Did you know that 45% of dementia cases are linked to modifiable lifestyle choices? (Dementia in Australia, 2023)
You're probably doing a lot of them without even knowing it.
There is strong evidence to support that physical activity can form a protective shield against dementia. A nice mixture of weight and aerobic training can be enough to lower your chances of developing the disease. So, who's most at risk? A person living a 'sedentary lifestyle'.
A sedentary lifestyle is that of someone who is motionless for large periods of time. Anyone with an office job or a passion for gaming probably falls into this category quite easily. The less you move, the weaker your shield is. (HRI, 2024)
Other habits such as poor diets, poor sleeping patterns, chronic stress, prolonged periods of depression, alcohol, smoking and even social isolation (among other things) have also been linked to dementia. That's a lot, right?
No one's going to get the balance perfect. In fact, you could live a perfectly healthy lifestyle and still develop the disease. But there are things we can do to minimise the chances.
So to summarise
- Don't drink excessively
- Definitely do not smoke
- Prioritise your physical activity (move)
- Eat healthy
- Sleep well
- Spend quality time with good people
This is exactly the kind of habit stacking habiter. was built for, and the reason why I'm building a community of people wanting to improve their life. If this sounds like you, join the community through our website.
I'll see you on the inside!
