Congratulations, you just completed a micro habit

I get it, big goals/routines/habits are daunting and hard to keep track of. So have you ever heard of Micro Habits? They're tiny, repeatable steps that move you toward a bigger target and the key is to make them so small and easy to achieve, that it's almost impossible not to achieve them (nib, 2026). I guarantee you're already doing a bunch of them every day as well!

Take me learning the guitar for example, the big daunting goal was to 'learn the guitar' and well, where do you even start? Picking up the guitar. Congratulations, you've just done a micro habit. If you can manage to break down any task or goal you have into these micro habits you'll make them ridiculously easy to achieve. The best part is, even on bad days you can still get them done.

So, how are they beneficial?

You see, we can trick our brain into thinking we're anything we want and by tricking our brain into completing these micro habits, we actually release a small amount of dopamine (a good chemical which releases in your brain when you do something enjoyable) (JW, 2024).

Back to the guitar. Imagine you just set the goal of 'learn the guitar' and then you picked it up and tried to strum it, realise you don't know any chord shapes or strumming patterns. Now you just feel flat and unmotivated to pick up the guitar again, which means you can't ever possibly learn to play it. Instead, set micro habits/tasks that you celebrate with yourself. This turns 'learn the guitar' into 'pick up the guitar,' 'strum the guitar,' 'practice one chord shape,' you get the picture. All of a sudden you've turned the big scary goal into these tiny, super achievable steps that make you want to come back for more.

Bringing it back to habiter.

Now, all you have to do is set this framework to one of your goals. This is where 'habiter.' comes in. The 'habiter.' app allows you to set the big, scary, daunting goal and it breaks it down for you into small, daily actionable tasks that are actually possible to hit and that move you in the direction of your goal. Pretty powerful, right?
